Summary
RUSHES STREWN ON the floors of royal palaces and parish churches, manor houses, and modest homes were one of the amenities of life in early modern England. They made floors of stone or earth a little warmer, drier, and softer underfoot. The smell of fresh green rushes freshened the air when the rushes were first distributed and afterwards, because bruising the plants by walking on them released their pleasant aroma. In London in the early fifteenth century, the business of gathering, transporting, buying, and selling rushes was so great that the Common Council ordered those who brought them on skiffs to bundle them on board, not on the wharves, because once unloaded, the piles of rushes impeded other commercial activity and left a mess for other people to deal with. For special occasions in the city, the streets of a procession route might be thoroughly cleaned, hung with arras, and strewn with rushes. In the final scene of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 2 for instance, a Groom calls for “More rushes, more rushes” to prepare for the passage of the new king, Henry V, through the streets of London. For special guests, providing fresh rushes was de rigueur as a sign of respect and hospitality—hence, in The Taming of the Shrew, Grumio reviews the preparations for the arrival of Petruchio and his bride: “Is supper ready,” he asks, “the house trimmed, rushes strewed, cobwebs swept, the servingmen in their new fustian, the white stockings, and every officer his wedding garment on?” Far be it from Petruchio's household to treat Katherine as if she were, as the saying goes, “not worth a rush.”
In certain northwestern counties of England—Lancashire, Cheshire, Westmorland, and Yorkshire—the practice of covering the floors of churches with fresh rushes developed into an annual parish festivity that aimed to celebrate and strengthen personal and communal bonds within families and households, within parishes, and between neighbouring ones. Rush-bearings were not limited to “the western extremes of Yorkshire,” but occurred at least as far east as Brandsby, in the North Riding, about fifteen miles north of the city of York. We do not know why this custom flourished in the northern counties, nor when it began to take shape.

Objective
To determine whether patients would have equivalent or improved outcomes when receiving non-surgical management versus surgical removal for vocal process granulomas.
MethodsA chart review was performed for 53 adults with vocal process granulomas. All patients received baseline anti-reflux treatment consisting of twice-daily proton pump inhibitors and vocal hygiene education. Further treatment approaches were divided into non-surgical (i.e. inhaled corticosteroids, voice therapy, botulinum toxin injections) and surgical groups. Subjective parameters (Voice Handicap Index 10 and Reflux Symptom Index) and outcomes were tabulated and statistically compared. Cause of granuloma was also analysed to determine if this influenced outcomes.
ResultsOf 53 patients, 47 (89 per cent) experienced reduction in granuloma size, while 37 (70 per cent) experienced complete resolution. The rate of complete granuloma resolution after initial treatment strategy alone was significantly higher in non-surgical compared to surgical patients (67 and 30 per cent, respectively; p = 0.039). No difference in outcome was seen between iatrogenic and idiopathic granulomas.
ConclusionNon-surgical patients were more likely to experience initial treatment success than those who underwent surgical removal. Continued emphasis should be placed on conservative treatment options prior to surgery for patients with this condition.

The epidemic of prescription and non-prescription opioid misuse is of particular importance in pregnancy. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada currently recommends opioid replacement therapy with methadone or buprenorphine for opioid-dependent women during pregnancy. This vulnerable segment of the population has been shown to be at increased risk of blood-borne infectious diseases, nutritional insecurity and stress. The objective of this study was to describe an urban cohort of pregnant women on opioid replacement therapy and to evaluate potential effects on the fetus. A retrospective chart review of all women on opioid replacement therapy and their infants who delivered at The Ottawa Hospital General and Civic campuses between January 1, 2013 and March 24, 2017 was conducted. Data were collected on maternal characteristics, pregnancy outcomes, neonatal outcomes and corresponding placental pathology. Maternal comorbidities identified included high rates of infection, tobacco use and illicit substance use, as well as increased rates of placental abruption compared with national averages. Compared with national baseline averages, the mean neonatal birth weight was low, and the incidence of small for gestational age infants and congenital anomalies was high. The incidence of NAS was comparable with estimates from other studies of similar cohorts. Findings support existing literature that calls for a comprehensive interdisciplinary risk reduction approach including dietary, social, domestic, psychological and other supports to care for opioid-dependent women in pregnancy.

This study aimed to examine the effects of replacing rolled barley (high in starch) with citrus pulp (high in digestible fibre) in a supplement on intake and performance of young growing cattle offered grass silage ad libitum for 101 days. Weaned, early- and late-maturing breed, male suckled beef calves (n=120) were blocked by sire breed, gender and weight and from within block randomly assigned to one of two concentrate supplements based mainly on rolled barley (BAR) or citrus pulp (CIT) and formulated to have similar concentrations of true protein digestible in the small intestine. On day 87, blood samples were taken before and 2 h after feeding, and rumen fluid samples were collected 2 h post-feeding. Supplement type did not affect (P>0.05) grass silage intake, live weight gain, final live weight, ultrasonically assessed body composition or measurements of skeletal size. Rumen pH (6.64 v. 6.79), ammonia (51 v. 81 mg/l) and acetate-to-propionate ratio (2.7 v. 3.2) were lower (P<0.001) for CIT than BAR. In conclusion, citrus pulp can replace barley in concentrate supplements for growing cattle without negatively affecting performance.

The performance of early-maturing breed sired suckler bulls finished at pasture, with or without concentrate supplementation, at 15 or 19 months of age was evaluated. In total, 60 Aberdeen Angus-sired bulls were assigned to a two (slaughter age (SA): 15 (S15) or 19 (S19) months)×two (finishing strategies (FS): grass only or grass+barley-based concentrate) factorial arrangement. There were no (P>0.05) SA×FS interactions. Increasing SA increased carcass weight (265 v. 355 kg), kill-out proportion (542 v. 561 g/kg), conformation (6.7 v. 8.3, 1 to 15) (P<0.001) and fat (5.8 v. 6.8) scores (P<0.01), and resulted in yellower subcutaneous fat (‘b’ value, 6.6 v. 8.3) and darker muscle (‘L’ value, 30.0 v. 28.3) (P<0.01). Supplementation reduced estimated herbage intake by 0.60 and 0.47 kg dry matter (DM)/kg DM of concentrates for S15 and S19, respectively. Supplementation increased carcass weight (+6.7%, P<0.001) and kill-out proportion (+1.8%, P=0.06) but had no effect on carcass fat and conformation scores or fat and muscle colour. In conclusion, carcasses were adequately finished, with or without concentrates for S19, but not for S15. Supplementation had no effect, and age had relatively minor effects, on fat and muscle colour.

For more than 15 years, the radiocarbon community has participated in a series of laboratory intercomparisons in response to the issue of comparability of measurements as perceived within the wider user communities (Scott et al. 1990; Rozanski et al. 1992; Gulliksen and Scott 1995; Scott et al. 1997). In this report, we provide an update on the current 14C laboratory intercomparison and reflect on future issues linked to the laboratory intercomparison program, not least those resulting from a significant growth in the number of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) facilities providing routine dating of small samples (milligram size).

Of the many important developments in space astronomy during the past three years perhaps the most dramatic was the voyage of the Mariner II which passed less than 35 000 km from the surface of the planet Venus on 14 December 1962 and from which valuable measurements were made of the mass and magnetic field of Venus of the structure of its atmosphere and of conditions in the interplanetary medium. A second event of great importance to solar physics was the successful launching in March 1962 of the first of NASA’s Orbiting Solar Observatories’ the first satellite to be especially designed as a stabilized platform for solar observation. Six additional satellites in this series are planned between 1964 and 1966. Striking advances in the range and quality of rocket solar spectra have also been achieved. Soft X-ray spectra have been photographed to a short-wave limit of 13·8Å and the resolving power at longer wavelengths has been improved by as much as a factor of 10.
